相对来说摇滚应该是比较容易理解的一种音乐形式，对于欣赏摇滚乐，甚至对于一般意义上的流行音乐，除了品味旋律、和声、节奏等“音乐语言”外，要正确理解作者的意图，甚至是分析当时的时代背景，琢磨歌词是很重要的一方面。
    摇滚乐是从某种意义上讲是最纯洁的一种音乐形式，因为它本身并没有添加任何多余的修饰，赤裸裸的，其中的每个细节都显得如此必不可少。摇滚给人的感觉很坦然而且很直接。
    摇滚所涉及的主题很多，集中表现在战争、爱情、寻求自我等等，内容方面，一方面有积极的，如反对战争渴望和平，又如渴望摆脱枷锁寻求革命等，另一方面有消极、甚至是堕落的，如吸毒、暴力等。然而大多都是反映对美好的向往，追求绝对的自由的欲望，使摇滚乐表现得如此地气势磅礴，然而被爱情屈服时又是如此地坦然和无奈。
